Aminoglycoside Powder Injection

A: Patients receiving aminoglycosides should be advised to monitor for signs of hypersensitivity and auditory changes. This may include tinnitus and hearing loss. Patients may also experience accompanying vertigo while on the medication.

A: To ensure the aminoglycoside is still therapeutic if renal function improves. Note that the standard of care for aminoglycosides warrants monitoring of both renal function parameters (eg serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, urine output) and serum concentrations; monitoring only one or the other is unacceptable.

A: Aminoglycosides are unique among other protein synthesis inhibitors in that they are bactericidal. All other classes of antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis, including chloramphenicol, clindamycin, tetracyclines, macrolides, pleuromutilins, and oxazolidinones are bacteriostatic.

A: Patients who experience hearing loss may also develop balance problems. Penicillin and beta-lactam antibiotics become less effective when taken with aminoglycosides. Patients taking Warfarin and Methotrexate should avoid aminoglycosides.

A: These antibiotics are usually used with another antibiotic that is effective against many types of bacteria (called a broad-spectrum antibiotic). All aminoglycosides can damage the ears and kidneys. So doctors monitor the dose carefully and, if possible, often choose a different type of antibiotic.

A: The traditional (conventional, divided daily dose) approach to parenteral aminoglycoside dosing in adults involves the administration of a weight-based dose divided two to three times daily in patients with normal renal function.
